Earl Marriott Secondary celebrates 50th anniversary April 27

The hallways of Earl Marriott Secondary will transform into memory lane later this month as former students, staff and members of the school community come together for an open house celebrating the school’s 50th anniversary.

When it officially opened in 1974, Earl Marriott was considered one of the largest secondary schools in Western Canada. The school would go on to be known for its fine arts and athletics programming, as well as its French Immersion program, which is one of the oldest in the country.

Five decades and a few thousand graduates later, teacher Sara Coyne is looking forward to welcoming multiple generations of ‘Mariners’ back to their alma mater.

“We’ve had this idea for a while to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary,” said Coyne. “We’ll be opening our doors in an open-house format and people can stop by to reminisce, walk the halls and look through some of the historical galleries and items we’ll have out.”

A self-described “ancient mariner” (after the poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge), Coyne graduated from the school in the 1980s, only to return as a teacher in the 1990s where she has since spent her teaching career.

“I’ve worked alongside many of the people who actually taught me, so that was a big adjustment at the time," she said with a laugh. “I had a great time at the school as a student and so it seemed like a good place to come back to.”

Coyne’s journey is among the numerous lives influenced by the South 91国产 school, with many people already expressing interest in attending this month’s celebration.

“We’ve heard from a lot of former students and staff members that they’ll be attending,” she said. “Some are coming from as far as out-of-province and it’s turning into an impromptu reunion for many past graduates, with several after-parties planned at various pubs for different graduating years.”

Coyne said attendees will be able to wander the halls and find their old classrooms and lockers, take student-guided tours and flip through old yearbooks and archival images alongside other past graduates and staff members.

“It will just be a great chance for people to gather, talk amongst themselves and reminisce about their time here,” she said. “We’ll also have some light refreshments out to enjoy.”

The Earl Marriott Secondary 50th Alumni Event takes place April 27, 4-7 p.m. and people can RSVP to Sara Coyne at coyne_s@surreyschools.ca. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased , or at the door. For more information see the .
